  • More perfect fall weather for a New England marathon
  • Magic family-member-of-police-chief card gets me out of speeding ticket on the way home

Low-lights:

  • Actually speeding due to urgent need to pee, lack of exits or bathrooms of any kind anywhere on Route 87

Last Chance for Boston Marathon

Highlights:

  • Somehow convinced Shannon to drive from Hoboken, NJ to Canton, OH, visit the Pro Football Hall of Fame and then watch me run a marathon in Columbus, OH
  • Got to see Lombardi Trophy and assorted memorabilia from this game
  • Pro Football HOF nice enough to put up a Jets display so Shannon could get her picture taken in front of something

Low-lights:

  • Marathon course actually 26 one-mile loops around an office park outside of Columbus, OH
  • Advertised as Last Chance for Boston, turned out to be 17th to last chance
  • Very cold

  • Marge and Bill Moran for providing a place to stay on either end of this trip.
  • Shannon for agreeing to all this driving and football hall of fame visiting.
  • Shannon for getting me that cold weather running jacket for Christmas.

Highlights:

  • First 24 miles of course still quiet, scenic and flat
  • Legs really hurt, still got down on one knee the next day to propose
  • Shannon says yes, is aware that marriage will include undefined number of additional marathon watching experiences

Low-lights:

  • Having one Thanksgiving on Thursday, another Thanksgiving on Friday and running a marathon on Saturday apparently makes me go cross-eyed
  • Already ran MD, last time this course didn’t include that uphill from mile 24 on in
  • Damn Giants try to ruin the whole weekend

Highlights:

  • Staying at the Inn on Newfound Lake
  • Driving the course the night before, realizing there were hills, planning accordingly
  • Perfect fall weather, fantastic course around Newfound Lake, post-race seafood in Ashland, NH…also, fudge

Low-lights:

  • Pretty hard to find somewhere to eat breakfast on a Sunday morning in Bristol, NH

  • Shannon for agreeing that running a marathon can be part of a standard weekend couples getaway, setting a precedent for many, many more similar weekends.

Potomac River Marathon

Highlights:

  • New PR
  • Out and back and out and back course along the Potomac really scenic, quite helpful in acquiring PR
  • Can say I once finished a marathon in 8th place

Low-lights:

  • Have to add that there were only 143 finishers
  • Marathon start/finish 15 miles from her home, Marge declines to attend, chooses to sleep in
  • PR still 11 minutes too slow to qualify for Boston

  • Road trip with Mile Square Running Clubbers Mark and Paul
  • All three wives not complaining about the rain, general boredom that is marathon watching
  • Mark running a 3:18 in his first ever marathon

Low-lights:

  • Rain, lots and lots of rain
  • Emergency support call from CSTV hours after completion of race
  • Rain

  • Passing mile 25, randomly seeing high school friend Mark Savary on boardwalk watching the race, thinking I might be hallucinating
  • First sub-3:30 since college

Low-lights:

  • Getting lost on the way to pre-race dinner, ensuing fight with Shannon
  • Lack of GPS devices in 2005
  • Already ran NJ…twice

  • Alysha moving to Traverse City, providing legitimate excuse to travel to Michigan
  • Beautiful course along the coast of Grand Traverse Bay
  • Drinking a “bag of beers”, staying out until 1am with Alysha and Chris the night before the race really fun, seemed like good idea

Low-lights:

  • Drinking a “bag of beers”, staying out until 1am with Alysha and Chris the night before the race really fun, actually not a good idea
  • Mile 23 pit-stop (see above)

Highlights:

  • Impromptu marathon running, pacing someone else kind of fun
  • Much, much better weather than the last time I ran this marathon
  • Marathon still called “Jersey Shore Marathon”, MTV’s Jersey Shore five years away from forcing this race to change its name

Low-lights:

  • My motivational techniques a bit over the top if recipient hasn’t seen Rocky IV
  • Already ran NJ
