Low-lights:

• Found out running a marathon while being pretty sick actually not fun
• Rain
• Was driving to Rhode Island when this happened, radio broadcast did not do it justice

Un-official Washington DC Marathon

Highlights:

• Grassroots effort to organize “Un-official” DC Marathon after the official race is canceled less than 48hrs prior to the start under dubious circumstances
• Finding out about grassroots effort to organize “Un-official” DC marathon on this new “internet” thing
• Seriously very cool how this whole race came together

Low-lights:

• Race organizer, H2O, using post 9/11 “security threats” as an excuse to cancel a marathon that they had no intention of ever putting on, taking our money anyway
• Friends, family letting me grow this beard, allowing me to walk around in public looking like some sort of deranged, marathon-running, mountain man
• Jon K placing asterisk next to this one due to “un-official” nature of the race

• Marge and Bill Moran, Odette, Jim and Rachel for coming out to support me.
• Everyone who helped make this race happen.
• Syracuse University hoops for refusing to end the day on a sour note and rallying from 17 points down to beat Oklahoma State in the second round of the NCAA tournament that afternoon.

Blue Marsh Trail Marathon

Highlights:

• Pulling into start area, realizing this was a “trail” marathon
• Shortly thereafter, realizing what a “trail” marathon actually is
• No friends or family around to witness cool post-race trick where I squirt blood from my left middle toe by pressing down on toenail

Low-lights:

• No friends or family around to witnessed any portion of race, create photographic evidence of any kind
• Race now defunct, even Google doesn’t know about this marathon, passing reference to “that benign trail marathon” here is the only evidence that I can find on the entire interwebs
• Starting to think I imagined the whole thing

• Jim Newton for providing a post-race basement in which to recover and watch the Giants thrilling 9-6 victory over the Seahawks.

New Jersey Shore Marathon (2002)

Highlights:

• Third marathon, third PR
• Being young enough to think that new PRs would just keep happening
• Marathon still called “Jersey Shore Marathon”, MTV’s Jersey Shore seven years away from forcing this race to change its name

Low-lights:

• Rain, lots of rain
• Unfortunate spandex tights photographed, Syracuse visor forgotten
• Always heard that first marathon was to make mistakes, second marathon was to learn from those mistakes and any marathon thereafter was because you were too stupid to quit…am too stupid to quit

Highlights:

• A new PR by 50 seconds is still a new PR
• NCR trail quiet, scenic, flat
• Post – Thanksgiving marathon one way to justify amount of food consumed over the previous two days

Low-lights:

• Family & friends attendance drops by 300%, starting to think watching a marathon not as fun as running one

Wineglass Marathon

Highlights:

• First marathon, automatic PR
• Finisher medal courtesy of the Corning Museum of Glass one of the coolest out there
• Complimentary bottle of champagne given to finishers, will drink it when I’m done with all 50 states

Low-lights:

• Complimentary bottle of champagne probably won’t taste so hot by the time I’m done with all 50 states
• That shortcut from Syracuse to Corning through Ithaca, not actually a shortcut
• Thought this marathon running was going to be a one time thing
