Highlights:

• Exploring New Mexico archeology (Petroglyphs National Monument), science (Very Large Array), nature (White Sands National Monument) and whatever you call this (Roswell)
• Successfully forcing both boys to ride large land-based animals and one boy to catch, clean, prepare and cook smaller, water-based animals
• Taking the tram to the top of Sandia Peak, back down again and then closing out the trip at the ballpark taking in the ‘topes.

Low-lights:

• Ruidoso, NM is at altitude, has many steep forest hills, not conducive to quick marathons
• Dylan added New Mexico to the list of states in which he has gotten car sick
• Dominated by my children in golf, chess and water sports

• To Bill and Marge for making the NM trip possible even if they were forced to sit this one out
• To Shannon, Luke and Dylan for being such great travelers
• To Katie for joining in on the running and surviving a kid-centric week in the wilderness

Highlights:

• Solo cabin in the woods, running and hiking in Voyageurs National Park, not seeing any other humans
• Nobody around to curb my compulsion for driving out of my way to take pictures with random roadside attractions of questionable value
• Flat course, low temps, fastest marathon in five years

Low-lights:

• Uncooperative Aurora Borealis, forced to take generic night photos of Voyageurs National Park
• Questionable race day weather
• May now have to visit three other balls of twine to get to the bottom of this

Thanks:

• To Shannon for supervising Luke’s construction of a Lego Star Destroyer in my absence
• Lucy for putting me up the night after the marathon and giving me the walking tour of historic Northfield, MN
• To Marge for not being too mad that I went on this trip without her

Highlights:

• Perfect weather, fantastic course, mental note to come back here if I ever decide to get serious about qualifying for Boston again
• Got to Independence Hall just after the alt-right rally ended so I didn’t have to explain to my 7 and 5 year old what a Neo-Nazi is
• Crossed the finished line, ran up the Rocky steps and then ran back to the hotel, so, ultra?

Low-lights:

• Phone died mid-race, no photo evidence of my post-race Rocky steps pose
• Luke, unimpressed by the Liberty Bell, “its big, I guess, I just thought it would be much bigger”
• Had to ditch the sweatpants at mile 1, not sure how Rocky did it

• To Marge for tagging along and entertaining the kids while I ran
• To John and Peg for once again hosting Eli
• To HBO for providing the race entry free of charge

New York City Marathon (2018)

Highlights:

• Really getting the hang of the marathon morning commute and pre-race nap
• Perfect fall day to go for a run through the outer boroughs and finish up with a loop in Central Park
• Second year in a row that I dominated 5th Avenue

Low-lights:

• Tough to get up to speed for the first 8-10 miles, apparently a lot of people run this event
• Finally found out how much it costs to ride in a pedicab
• Bus from the Ferry to the start village didn’t quite make it, had to walk the last half mile

• Provided a solid excuse to make a Wegmans run
• Well organized, super convenient location (arrived in time to see the ‘Cuse lose on Saturday, home in time to watch the Giants lose on Sunday)
• Mile 24 beer dispensing hydration station

Low-lights:

• Heat
• Humidity
• My stupid body not being able to deal with heat and humidity

• Pre-Ragnar midnight shakeout run

• Race course far enough north to provide access to Peeper Ale

Low-lights:

• Team Westworld, Van 2 down a runner, one less person to witness our awesomeness
• Native Saratogians not receptive to our NYC comedic stylings
• Lake Placid Rodeway Inn’s mattress to urine ratio

Thanks:

• To Shannon for driving up to Lake Placid, hanging out with a bunch of my smelly, drunk co-workers and then humoring me while we relived the Miracle on Ice the following morning before driving Matt and I home
• John and Peg for watching the boys
• Alma and the fitness center crew for continuing to organize the HBO teams

Highlights:

• Successfully visited the Salt Lake Temple, the Transcontinental Railroad Golden Spike site and the Idaho Potato Museum within one 24 hour period
• All Idaho road trip day visiting the worlds first nuclear power plant, checking out the lava flows and hiking the volcanoes at Craters of the Moon, exploring the Shoshone Ice Caves, before taking in the Shoshone Falls and finally swiming in the Snake River
• National Park adventure day up to Yellowstone, through the geyser basin to Old Faithful, up over the continental divide, down into Moran, WY, past Mt. Moran and into Grand Teton for a dip in a few lakes and finally onto Jackson, WY for dinner and ice cream
• Also, Luke and I checked off Idaho and I managed to run a marathon at attitude without throwing up

Low-lights:

• Luke’s stilt skills, Dylan’s geode smashing technique
• Old Faithful, reliable but underwhelming
• Spent significant time in Salt Lake learning about Mormons, still just have the one wife

Thanks:

• To Shannon, Luke and Dylan for putting up with the heavy travel load and pretending to be interested in sites that perhaps were only interesting to me
• To Bill and Marge for funding and putting up with the heavy travel load as well as our occasionally tired and cranky kids
• To John and Peg for once again looking after our fur child, Eli

• Muddy trail event, close to home, small field and consistent loops – 66th time was the charm, finally won a marathon

Low-lights:

• Not sure I can salvage these shoes

• To Shannon for showing up to yet another marathon, even if it was just 15 minutes from home and on the way to our friends house
• To Luke and Dylan for cheering on a yet another marathon and finally being satisfied with my response when they asked if I had won
• To the Tomkins for the post-race lunch / marshmallow roasting session

Highlights:

• Water park, arcade, pizza and ice cream; possible that Luke and Dylan may not have noticed that I left and ran a marathon on Sunday morning
• Just a really solid marathon course profile
• Got in under 3:30 (see: profile, course) and was back at the water park “parenting” by 11:30 AM

Low-lights:

• That glass of water by Shannon’s elbow is definitely getting spilled across the table
• That rice crispy treat is still only 10% eaten
• Local town continues to misspell my name

Thanks:

• To John & Peg for once again letting Eli live with them for the weekend
• To Shannon for developing a successful strategy for managing two small children in a crowded water park while I ran out for a few hours
• To Luke & Dylan for enjoying yet another somewhat marathon related family trip

Highlights:

• Riad le Clos de Arts was a perfect home from which to explore all the Marakech sites, from the snake charmers of Jemaa el Fnaa to the museums, markets and souks of the Medina to the Bahia Palace, Koutoubia Mosque and Menara Gardens outside the city gates.
• Two day excursion through the foothills, up over the High Atlas Mountains, pit-stopping for a hike around Ait Ben Haddou (Yunkai) before heading down through the Draa Valley for a short camel ride to our overnight camp in the desert.  Watching the sun rise over the Sahara and then doing it all over again in the opposite direction.
• Relaxing in Agadir at Riu Tikida Dunas with plenty of time to lay by the pool, dip our toes in the Atlantic and squeeze in a round at Golf Du Soleil.  There even happened to be a marathon and a chance for a day hike through the gorges of Paradise Valley.

Low-lights:

• Riding camels unexpectedly painful, our entire group of campers declined the return ride and elected to instead trek out of the Sahara on foot.  Shannon wore a winter coat.
• Marathon course was hot and there were lots of hills, including one 50 meters from the finish line but Scoh managed to get it done.
• Scorpions

• To John and Peg for taking Luke & Dylan shift #1 including Dylan’s first baseball “game” and PJ Masks Live
• To Marge and Bill for taking Luke & Dylan shift #2 and even squeezing in some golf for the boys
• To Shannon for continuing to be married to me even though every time we go on a vacation I disappear for 3-4 hours to run a marathon
