Highlights:

• Got to meet the HBO Ragnar crew and spend some quality time with my van-mates. Starting to think I may have been hired primarily because of my willingness to run long distances on little to no sleep
• Solid fan support, unique sites and beautiful views, even once I got back home
• Got to learn from experienced Ragnarians who know how to stock up on the essentials and focus on the most important parts of the event

Low-lights:

• Took 1.5 hrs to get our van off of the island of Manhattan Thursday evening, easily the worst pace our team maintained all weekend
• 24 runners, 6 hotel rooms, 2 beds per room…you do the math
• Talked a huge relay bracelet exchange game. Totally botched the final hand-off.

• To Dave Pugh for connecting me with team and to the HBO Ragnar crew for welcoming me aboard
• To my Henlee, Kathy, Taylor, Erin and Mallory for living in a van with me for 48 hours and remaining friends by the end of the event
• To Shannon for driving out to PA for the finish, acting as un-official team photographer and driving me back home even though I hadn’t showered in two days

Highlights:

• Deanna Rose Children’s Farmstead – “Dylan” caught a fish, Luke fed a goat, both boys successfully mined for priceless gemstones
• Combat Air Museum – Felt the need, the need for speed
• Red Crow Brewery – Plenty of perfectly safe places for your children to wander around while you drink beer

Low-lights:

• Flight to Kansas City cancelled, rerouted through Chicago, arrived in Olathe just in time for a solid 5 hours of sleep before the race
• Fighting a stomach bug, still managed to set a personal record…for porta-potties hit during one marathon
• Significance of the Brown v. Board of Education museum way over Luke and Dylan’s heads

Thanks:

• To Shannon for once again herding our kids through airport security, shuttle buses, rental car counters, late night hotel check-ins, complimentary hotel breakfasts and multiple visits to the hotel pool.
• To Luke for once again helping me close out the final 100 yards of a marathon.
• To Dylan for once again managing to fall asleep anywhere, any time.

Highlights:

• Getting back down to my racing weight, fastest half marathon in about two years
• Jim and Dori completing the half marathon challenge, Jim unequivocally vowing to run the Empire State Marathon with me in the fall
• Two races means two medals means each kid gets one and no one is forced to experience the indignity of having to share

Low-lights:

• Technically not a half marathon but rather a half marathon challenge made up of a 5K race immediately followed by a 10 mile race
• Those 20 or so minutes between the end of the 5K and the start of the 10 miler kind of cold

• Jim and Dori for braving the wind and cold
• Dave Pugh for motivating me to get back down to my racing weight
• Luke for continuing to participate in any and all post-race celebratory activities

New York City Marathon (2016)

Highlights:

• Minimal travel costs, spent the night before the race at the luxurious Hotel Moran, indulged in a pre-race back massage provided by one of their experienced staff members
• Running across the Verrazano Bridge still pretty cool
• Managed to find Reid, Swati and Dave Pugh on the course

Low-lights:

• Two marathons in one month, still a tall order
• Fifth Avenue, still mostly uphill
• Announcing the marathon winners when I was only at mile 13, still mildly annoying

• To Swati for making an impromptu support appearance on First Ave
• To the Optimity crew who came out to support in Brooklyn even if some of them failed to get there in time because I was so fast

Highlights:

• South Dakota really up Dylan’s alley, able to hit all of his must-see items (Dinosaurs, Snakes, Turtles & Bears) in one day
• Exploring the natural beauty of the Black Hills, living life off the grid for a few days
• Luke was mildly pumped to receive his own marathon finisher medal, Dylan was just happy to land on the podium

Low-lights:

• Moran Family trip to Mount Rushmore complete but 28 years behind schedule
• Kind of forgot that the marathon was going to be run at 6,000+ ft above sea level
• All Deadwood museums closed so Dylan just quit

Thanks:

• To Marge and Bill for supporting yet another marathon trip that involved air and car travel with two small children
• To Shannon for agreeing to spend 5 days with our kids and my parents in a cabin in the woods with no cell service and no wi-fi
• To Luke for helping me across another finish line and Dylan for continuing to travel like a champ

Highlights:

• Successfully completed (one-third of one-half of) an Ironman!
• Team Mom and Dads placed 20th in the relay despite my uninspired half-marathon performance
• Witnessed some locals participating in a traditional Atlantic City 5:30 AM belt-fight

Low-lights:

• Heat
• Heat related splits
• Failed to recoup race entry fees at local casino

Thanks:

• To Dori for talking me into a half-Ironman relay and taking on the swim
• To Jim deciding his first competitive bike event should be a 56 miler
• To Shannon for coming along for support (and also John and Peg for watching our kids so Shannon could come along for support)

Highlights:

• Ran respectable splits with 100% less excruciating foot pain than I experienced during last year’s event
• Old man squad managed to finish with event’s fourth fastest elapsed time
• Extended the sea portion of the event into a solid week at the jersey shore with tons of beach fun for the boys

Low-lights:

• Course shortened by 21 miles for some unknown reason
• Heat
• Just straight up dominated by a team of 90 pound teenaged runners

Thanks:

• Marge and Bill for putting me up the night before the race and dropping me off to meet my friends at the start high school style
• Shannon for driving the kids ‘down the shore’ and picking me up at the finish
• John, Peg, Shannon for working their beach vacation around the race date

Highlights:

• Post flight, Dylan-led, hike through the Crabtree Nature Center and standard dip in the hotel pool
• Visiting the Blacksmith Shop in Galena before jumping into a game and living out my baseball fantasy with Luke at the Field of Dreams (while Dylan napped and ate ice cream)
• Fossil Hike, Tractor Museum, swimming in Lake Michigan and checking out dinosaur bones in Chicago

Low-lights:

• The midwest is still very hot and very humid and it took me a long time to run a marathon, the kids were not super pumped about the wait
• Repeatedly warned Luke not to poke his Field of Dreams Commemorative Mini-Bat through that sewer grate. Field of Dreams Commemorative Mini-Bat currently located at the bottom of that sewer
• “I pooped in my pants!” – Dylan, in the O’hare food court 15 minutes before boarding our return flight

Thanks:

• To Shannon for managing another lengthy road trip across the midwest with two small children and to Luke and Dylan for putting up with a lengthy road trip across the midwest to the best of their 5-year old and 3-year old abilities
• To Blair for all the kid-friendly Iowa related recommendations
• To John and Peg for transporting the Moran clan to / from Newark Airport and watching our pup while we were gone

• Post-race hail storm
• Luke, utterly terrified of the vicious new family member

Highlights:

• Completed Phase II (Log appropriate training miles, run a 3:30-ish marathon, remain pain-free) of my Plantar Fasciitis Recovery Plan
• Sobering history lessons
• Visited music nerd heaven and picked up some interesting interior decorating ideas

Low-lights:

• In addition to running a marathon, also added Arkansas to the list of states in which I’ve been ticketed for speeding
• Had ideal searching conditions, found zero diamonds
• Random thing you can climb to the top of closed for renovations

Thanks:

• To Shannon for agreeing to spend a long weekend in Arkansas and only requesting a morning at a hot springs powered spa in exchange
• To John and Peg for allowing us to off-load our human and canine responsibilities for the duration of our trip
• To the running weather gods who pushed the thunder and torrential downpours to the morning after the marathon
